The health, wellbeing and livelihoods of humankind are dependent on nature, and yet nature is more under threat than ever. The State of Nature report in 2023 shows the UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world with declines in insects, flowers, plants and animals. Globally, almost all rivers tested have found pharmaceutical pollution .
However, we also know the physical and health benefits of being part of a thriving natural living world. Green spaces benefits health through minimising exposure to harmful substances (like air pollution, excess heat and noise), improved stress management and mental wellbeing, enhanced physical activity opportunities, reduced cardiovascular mortality and diabetes and, through exposure to sunlight, improved sleep .
Is there anything a planetary health approach to Lifestyle Medicine can’t do? If we look after – and restore – the natural living world, the natural living world looks after us. This study day has been accredited for 5.5 Hours CPD.
